“… Taking steps to freedom-an ambitious dance piece by Italian choreographer Mimmo Miccolis explores human rights violations around the world”

RIGHTS(?) is a multimedia contemporary dance performance that brings attention to human rights, which are particularly prone to violation.

Originally funded by the BBC performing arts fund, it premiered in London in 2012. Choreographer Mimmo Miccolis approaches each human right from two sides: first, the interpretation of the right in the modern society, and second, the intrinsic meaning of that right. Every movement is created based on a strong emotional message in order for art and reality to unite as one. It’s American premiere will be set on 5 dancers from the Washington Ballet.

Structured in eight sections, Rights(?) invites the audience to take a raw, yet sensitive, look at universally declared rights, which continue to be denied to millions of people such as the right to food, shelter and social security, freedom of speech, choice of religion or, most fundamental, the right to life.

The main challenge of such complex theme is to make it easily accessible to the audience and heighten their understanding of the key issues. Considering such an underrepresented presence of the human rights issue in dance performance, it adds to the challenge but also makes the reward that much greater. The remarkable thirst to bring it on stage in such a new and current medium is quenched in this performance through various multimedia techniques and innovative ideas.
