Freedom

Freedom is not a monument to the past, but a living movement that must be renewed through our actions and our humanity.

Contemporary choreographic creation commissioned by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Washington, DC.

Presented on May 10, 2023, during the official event “Celebrating 80 Years of Freedom” at the Freedom Concert held at the Netherlands Carillon in Washington, DC, FREEDOM is a contemporary dance work reflecting on liberation, collective memory, resilience, and human dignity.

Created for an international audience and performed in a symbolic public space overlooking the American capital, the piece explores freedom not as a fixed condition, but as a continuous movement between remembrance and responsibility, fragility and hope.

The choreography combines neoclassical precision with contemporary physicality, using ensemble dynamics and shifting spatial patterns to evoke both the weight of history and the possibility of renewal. Music, silence, and breath become part of the dramaturgy, allowing the dancers’ bodies to carry the emotional narrative without relying on literal storytelling.

Commissioned by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, FREEDOM was developed specifically for the commemorative context of the concert and the historic significance of the Netherlands Carillon as a monument dedicated to peace and friendship.
